Sahara was surrendered to us by her owner
Sahara is a girl with a heart of gold and so much love to give. After spending most of her first year of life living outdoors, she was surrendered to the rescue in April and has been making up for lost time ever since. Shes quickly discovered that couches, air conditioning, toys, and being loved by a family are pretty wonderful things.
Because of her past, Sahara can be a little nervous in new situations and around new people. She likes to take a moment to assess things before jumping in. But once she feels safe, her true personality shines through, and its impossible not to fall in love with her. She is sweet, affectionate, goofy, and incredibly devoted to her people. Sahara is still catching up on some of the things many dogs learn as puppies, but shes already made amazing progress. Shes fully potty trained, crate trained, knows sit and stay, and walks nicely on a leash most of the time. Like any young Aussie, she can get excited and pull or weave a bit on walks, but shes extremely smart and eager to learn.
Sahara definitely embraces her Australian Shepherd heritage and has strong herding instincts. Because shes still learning that people arent sheep, shed do best in a home with children 13 and older. Shes also still working on keeping all four paws on the ground when shes excited to see her favorite people. Because of these same herding breed traits, Sahara will also thrive in a home that can provide both physical exercise and mental enrichment. Walks and playtime are important, but she also loves opportunities to use her brain through training sessions, puzzle toys, herding balls, and other activities that give her a job to do. She needs a way to keep her mind busy as well as her body!
Once shes had a chance to burn off some energy, Sahara transforms into the ultimate cuddle bug. This 45-pound lap dog would happily spend most of her day curled up next to (or on top of) her person, soaking up all the affection and giving you all her love in return. She adores other dogs and would love a home with an active canine companion, especially another herding breed who can keep up with her play style. Sahara has come so far in such a short time, and with a patient family willing to continue helping her build confidence, shes going to make an absolutely incredible companion.
If youre looking for a smart, loyal, active best friend who wants nothing more than to be part of your family, Sahara may just be your perfect match.
