My Story

PLEASE NOTE: - Tony's foster will be in touch with the adoption applicants who are best suited for Tony's needs within a week (7 days) of submitting an adoption application - If you'd like to be considered, please start our online adoption application here: https://rockymountaindachshundrescue.com/adopt -------------------- Personal space? Forget about it! If you're looking for a loyal little shadow, Tony may be your perfect match. This lover boy wants nothing more than to be close to his people. Whether you're relaxing on the couch, cooking dinner in the kitchen, or heading out for a stroll... Tony is happiest when he's by your side. He's a world-class cuddler who would gladly spend his day curled up in your lap or next to you under some cozy blankets. Tony's ideal home is a quiet one where there's not a lot of commotion. One of Tony's biggest triggers is people entering the home or walking into a room. Thoughtful, controlled introductions are essential for everyone's safety and comfort. He needs time to process new people and build trust, but once he does, his confidence grows quickly. The people he lives with become part of his circle after a week or two of consistency and patience. When it comes to visitors, introductions should always be slow, positive, and at Tony's pace. A few tasty treats go a long way in helping him make new friends! You'll know Tony is ready to say hello when his tail starts wagging a million miles a minute—that's his way of saying, "Okay... I'm safe and I think we can be friends now." Tony feels most comfortable around women and forms trusting relationships with them very quickly. He is more cautious around men and needs extra time, patience, and positive experiences to learn that they are safe. Although his ideal home would be a women-only household, Tony can absolutely be successful in a home with a man—it just requires the right person. Any men in the household should be gentle, patient, and willing to let Tony set the pace. During the first week or two, it's important to avoid forcing interactions and instead allow Tony to approach on his own while pairing those moments with treats, praise, and positive experiences. Having a trusted female family member help guide those introductions can make a world of difference, giving Tony the reassurance he needs while he builds confidence. Once he realizes someone is part of his family, his walls come down, and his sweet, affectionate personality shines through. This little guy has confinement and separation anxiety if left completely alone. When left completely alone with no dog companion - he has chewed through wire crates, left bite marks on metal baby gates, and somehow managed to lift and squeeze underneath barriers that seemed impossible to get past. When anxious and alone, he may also have accidents in the house. However, his foster family has noticed that when they leave Tony and his foster brother alone on the couch together, the accidents and panicky behavior are far and less between. Tony's adopters will need to be willing to think outside the box and create a safe, secure space for him when they leave the home. There will likely be some trial and error, patience, and probably a few messes along the way. (Bonus points if you have easy-to-clean floors!) Tony would do best with a family that is home much of the time or committed to helping him work through his separation anxiety. He could thrive in a calm home with older, respectful children who understand canine boundaries. Tony can also be vocal, so a home without shared walls may be the best fit. We know Tony's list sounds specific, but that's because we want him to succeed. Beneath his worries is a sweet, devoted little dog who forms strong bonds with his people and simply wants to feel safe. He may not be able to cook you pasta, but he will love you in his own way—by supervising every meal, making sure your lap never gets cold, and loving you with every ounce of his dachshund heart. Tony is currently being fostered in Littleton, Colorado. Rocky Mountain Dachshund Rescue (RMDR) has foster families in Colorado, Nevada, Utah, Montana, and Wyoming. Please check the dogs location before your apply to adopt them. You will need to pick them up. RMDR DOES NOT TRANSPORT THE DOG TO YOU or transport them across state lines. The Colorado Department of Agriculture requires that all dogs entering PACFA-licensed facilities have a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued by an accredited veterinarian within 30 days of entry. Dogs over three months of age must also have proof of a current rabies vaccination, including the vaccination date, manufacturer, and serial number listed on the CVI. Puppies must receive parvovirus and distemper vaccinations at least 14 days before entry. These PACFA requirements may affect the adoption fee. For questions, please email us at [email protected]. At RMDR, adoptions are not first-come, first-served—we carefully place each dog in the home that best fits their needs. Applications are usually reviewed within 48 hours. Every RMDR dog is spayed/neutered, microchipped, and current on vaccinations.
