My Story

Dexter is a playful, cuddly, and wonderfully curious 12-week-old (born mid April) miniature schnauzer mix puppy who ready to find his forever family. He was found running in the middle of a rural highway, covered in fleas and clearly abandoned. Thankfully a good Samaritan scooped him up and he's been living the sweet life in his foster homes for the last 3 weeks. Due to summer vacations, he's bounced between two different foster homes who are always thrilled when it's their "shift" with this cuddly little guy. The good news of these transitions is we know he is adaptable, quick to learn, great with kids, good with cats, and LOVES dogs. Dexter a social little guy who absolutely loves cuddles. When he's around people and cats, he tends more towards cuddle and kisses mode. When he's around other dogs, all he wants to do is play, follow the big pup around, and learn "how to dog" from his pup pals. He has been around kids as young as 18 months and was timid and gentle, but as his personality comes out, he would likely do best with kids old enough to understand that puppy teething and play biting is a behavior to train rather than being scared. As one foster home, he loves to sleep curled up at his 8 year old (human) foster sisters neck. As his other foster home, he quickly adjusts to sleeping in his kennel next to his 10 year old (dog) foster brother's kennel. He has started on potty training and with regular breaks and lots of treats and praise, he shows promise of being fully potty trained soon once he has a consistent routine. Right now he's about 60% potty trained with occasional accidents, though he does a great job of not going potty in his kennel. He is currently working on his foundational skills, including crate training, housebreaking, and general puppy manners. Consistent routines and positive reinforcement will help him excel. He is friendly and social, but as with all young puppies, any resident cats or other pets should be introduced slowly and properly to ensure a smooth transition. Once Dexter is in a home with a committed adopter, his smart, eager to please traits will make him quick to train. Dexter is currently location in the greater Houston area. Adoption is available with transport to the Pacific Northwest, Colorado, and the Northeast (some restrictions may apply). Please note that we are currently unable to adopt to Oregon, New York, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Maine. Dexter's adoption fee is $700, which includes his transport, age-appropriate vaccinations, parasite treatment and prevention, neuter, and a microchip.
