My Story
Meet Tango AKA Backpack
Backpack is an 11 month old Australian Shepherd / Cattle Dog mix, weighing approximately 20 lbs.
He is a fun little guy with a big personality with the typical needs for his breed mix. He's looking for a new home, experienced with his breeds and needs.
Backpack loves a good game of tug and will happily get into the conflict play a lot of these dogs crave, but he's more sensitive than he lets on. He'll play fetch, but he's more of a chase guy. He loves the run and the grab, but the bring-it-back part is still coming along. That's trainable, and it points to what he really needs, which is a job.
He is a dog who wants mental work as much as a tired body. Trick training, dock diving for fun, barn hunt, flyball, anything that lets him move fast and think while he does it. He craves the work, but like most cattle dogs, you have to sell him on your ideas. Once he buys in, he's all the way in.
Backpack is very dog social and will do well with stable, adult dogs who will hold their own. With confident company, he's a good hang!
He does well in his crate and responds well to clear boundaries set early. After he's been out and working or socializing, he gets plenty of breaks. Lots of nap time and downtime between sessions. Structure is a big part of why he's doing well, and it's the kind of setup he'll need going forward.
Transitions are where Backpack asks the most of his people. His foster is working with him on handling changes and tolerance.
Backpack has some quirks, but he's got an even temperament underneath it all and a lot of classic cattle dog drive, which is why he needs an experienced home with no children under 13 years old. For the right home, he's going to be a really rewarding dog!
